100th Anniversary of Eagle Nest Dam!

Eagle Nest Dam and Lake is a story of our true western heritage, built from a dream of two brothers, Frank and Charles Springer. Early in the beginning of the 20th century, Frank and "Charlie" saw the need to provide a consistent supply of water not only for the surrounding ranches and farms but also for mining and irrigation projects for the surrounding communities. What better way than to corral the water from snowmelt that flowed for eons unchecked out of Moreno Valley that caused periodic disastrous floods. In 1906, the Springers first made application to the Territorial Engineer to build a dam; the approval of which took ten years. Construction on the dam was finally started in 1916, financed entirely by Frank, with Charles in charge of the entire project through to its completion in 1918. It was to become the largest privately built dam in the United States.
